  1. The Descendants (2011) Dir. Alexander Payne I heard such bad reviews for this new Payne movie (and I love Alexander Payne), so I was hesitant to watch it. But from the first twangy chords of the Hawaiian cowboy songs that populate the movie, I was hooked. There’s some opening commentary about how Hawaii isn’t the land of dreams (with shots of homeless people, etc.), but it’s all fluff since this film takes place in a very comfortable world. I was charmed!
